Winston McGarland Bailey OBE, HBM, better known as The Mighty Shadow or Shadow, was a calypsonian from Tobago.
Born in Belmont, Trinidad, Bailey grew up in Les Coteaux, Tobago, and began singing calypsos at age 8. At 16, he moved back to Port of Spain and was homeless for a time. By 1970, he performed in Mighty Sparrow's 'Young Brigade' calypso tent and soon established himself. He chose the stage name "Shadow" after hearing workmen use it and initially performed in all black with a large hat.
